something borrowed & something blue

Well, on Friday I finished The Guernsey Literary & Potato Peel Society, as you know. Saturday I began the next book on my "to read" list - Something Borrowed by Emily Giffin. I'd vaguely heard of this book before, but once I started working at my hospital, I noticed that all the nurses always raved about how good it was. So I asked to borrowed it and it's sequel from a friend.

Something Borrowed is written from the perspective of Rachel, the goody two-shoes lawyer in New York who has had a series of lackluster relationships and has always lived in the shadow of her gorgeous best friend, Darcy. On the eve of her 30th birthday, she sleeps with Darcy's fiance, and the book follows her as she tries to get her life back on track. It was a juicy and easy read, a novel that made me laugh, cringe, furrow my eyebrows in worry, and shed a few tears.

The sequel, Something Blue, picks up where the first book left off, but is from Darcy's perspective. She is pregnant, her previously charmed life falling apart before her eyes, and she thinks that uprooting and moving to London will give her the fresh start she needs. She learns to find more to appreciate in life than good looks and a fat bank account, and for once she relies on herself. This novel is a good follow up, and it also evoked a wide range of emotions from me! Especially the waterworks :)

So, if you are looking for some easy reads (read each one in about 8 hours) that get you to think about friendship, following your heart, and trusting yourself, I recommend these two gems!

Have any of you read these books?
What did you think of them?
Do you recommend Giffin's other novels, Baby Proof and Love the One You're With

Cheers, and happy reading!

  1. I LOVE Emily Giffin! She has a new book that just came out and I'm on the waiting list for it at the library. Something Borrowed and Something Blue are my favorites of hers but Baby Proof is pretty good too. I wasn't the biggest fan of Love the One You're With but that might just be me.

  2. I'm with Courtney: I love Emily Giffin!! I'm also on the wait list at the library for her latest book. haha! I liked Baby Proof and would recommend reading it, but Love the One You're With was just ok; it didn't quite live up to my expectations after Something Borrowed and Something Blue.

  3. I love Emily Giffin! SB and SB were her best books in my opinion. I mean Baby Proof and Love the One Your With were entertaining, but not as great as the others. I did not enjoy her new one though!
