i love a good film

I freaking love movies, but I wouldn't say I am a "movie buff" per se. I tend to like a lot of movies that people and critics hate, including cheesy romantic comedies that get like 1 star. Nonetheless, I love 'em. And during school this semester, I'm pretty sure I only saw 1 movie --- I absolutely couldn't hold off on seeing Hunger Games, could I? No. Definitely not. A girl has her standards, you know. 

Anyway, in the last 9 days since I have been off of school, I have been doing a nice job at catching up on Hollywood. Here is what I have watched and what I thought of them:

Haywire --- this movie was pretty bad. With a cast that includes Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas, Michael Fassbender, and Ewan McGregor...I thought it had promise. But it was a confusing spy movie that had a stupid motive. No doubt, the female protagonist had her kick ass moment, and fist fights men...but girl power doesn't save this flop.

 

PS... when you're a professional assassin...when do you have the time to get your hair cornrowed? Dumb. 

Underworld #??? --- I'm not sure what # in the Underworld series this is. #7? #4? I think I've only seen the first one, and turns out a lot of shit went down between the vampires and lycans (as usual) and between Kate Beckinsale and the vampire elders. I always like these types of movies, and this one was pretty good. Gory, but good. And I dig Kate Beckinsale's vampire portrayal.

50/50 --- Joseph Gordon Levitt stars in this film, and his story starts with the diagnosis of a rare form of spinal cancer. His hilarious best friend Seth Rogan helps get him through, as does his currently-in-grad school psychiatrist Anna Kendrick (LOVE HER). Anjelica Houston plays JGL's mom, and Bryce Dallas Howard (The Help) is JGL's cheating girlfriend. At once hilarious and heart-wrenching, I ADORED every minute of this movie. TOTALLY RECOMMEND!!!

The Vow --- I have been wanting to see this one since it came out in February! I'm sure most of you know the story, but in case you don't... Channing Tatum and Rachel McAdams play Leo and Paige, a newlywed couple in their mid twenties. They are madly in love and their world is shattered when they get into a terrible car accident and Paige doesn't remember who her husband is. The real kicker is that this is based on a true story! Such a sad thing to happen! The movie follows them as Leo does everything he can to uphold his vow to love and cherish his wife, even if she doesn't have any recollection of their love story. I shed lots of tears with this one, and LOVED it. Rachel McAdams is on a golden streak!

What To Expect When You're Expecting --- I almost peed the first time I saw a preview for this movie, and I have been waiting excitedly for it to come out for weeks! This one was not a let down --- I laughed throughout the entire thing! Except for the couple of minutes when I cried. Cast includes Cameron Diaz, J Lo, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, crazy blonde roommate from Bridesmaids, and crazy blonde cop from Reno 911. The cast was so much fun, but the true star was Elizabeth Banks! She is rising super fast on my list of favorite actresses! I'm also pretty sure when I'm pregnant, it's going to be a lot like her character (to which Tyler said, "oh shit.")haha. The husband came with me to see this one and was laughing the whole time, too! TOTALLY RECOMMEND!!!

The Avengers --- apparently I am WAY behind the superhero curve, because I have not seen ANY of the movies that lead up to this movie! Because of this movie I now need to watch Captain America, The Hulk, Thor, Iron Man (how many are there?), and whatever movies involve Hawkeye and Black Widow - because I have no idea where they came from! haha. That's a lot of movies. Anyway, we saw it in 3D and it was awesome! Great fight scenes, incredible cast. Robert Downey Jr took the cake for me as Iron Man. It was lots of fun!!!

So there you have it. I've been balancing my organization freak out and hours at the gym with lots of movie catching up!

the end, the beginning

My last day of winter vacation.

I can hardly complain, considering I had an entire 4 weeks of glorious vacation from PA School. I enjoyed ev-er-y single minute of it. It was complete bliss.

I finally was able to clean my house. See my family (lots - I may have overstayed my welcome at my parents' house more than once). Spend time with my husband. WATCH MOVIES. I'm talking lots of movies. Even an XMen marathon with my little sister: I, II, III, and 1st Class. See some friends. Drink wine. Drink beer (I may still be hungover from New Years Eve). Read. Cuddle my dogs - for hours and hours every day. Laugh.

And I found out that my insomnia was indeed stress-induced (probably ISBM-induced to be more specific), like I thought --- I only took ambien ONCE over break!

I finally saw Soul Surfer and One Day (amidst a slew of other films I have already blogged about) --- movies I have been dying to see! And I must say that Soul Surfer is now one of my favorite movies of all time --- hands down! It is a movie with a Christian base, and it tells the story of Bethany Hamilton, a teenager who got her arm bitten off in a shark attack while surfing. Throughout the tragedy of the accident, Bethany never loses faith in God nor in her ability to make it as a professional surfer. With the help of her incredibly supportive family, she relearns how to surf, and indeed her dreams come true. This film is uplifting, encouraging, sad, and beautiful. LOVED IT. 

One Day, starring Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, is a tale of love and friendship, and blurring the lines between the two. Anne Hathaway does her best to play a British woman...but the accent is just odd. Sometimes Scottish, sometimes American, sometimes British...mostly awkward. The movie wasn't all I had expected it to be. It was frustrating, not very romantic, kind of funny, and tragic. Not exactly my favorite ingredients for a win-me-over-rom-com. Did anyone else see it? What did you think?

I am so grateful for this time I had to reconnect with my loved ones, and reconnect with myself. Oh and reconnect with the blogworld, too :)

So, tis the end of my break. But the beginning of a new semester for me. A semester in which I hope to fare better than I did last semester (emotionally, grade-wise). One in which I will strive for that balance, and try to remember to smile and laugh more often :)

movies, i adore thee

Hello, friends :)

So, my little sister got her tonsils out last week, and I, being the good older sister that I am, have been popping back and forth between Aurora and Fort Collins to help take care of her. Honestly, she doesn't need a whole lot of caretaking...but it is lovely to be at home lounging around, alternating between reading, watching food network, and giggling.

In the last 24 hours, my sister and I watched three movies, and I figured I ought to review them, because that is what I do :)

#1 Midnight in Paris

I was a little hesitant to watch this movie, because the last Owen Wilson movie I saw was Hall Pass, and that was the least funny comedy movie I have seen in a long time. However, the romantic Parisian music and lights in the previews hooked me, and I couldn't resist renting it.

Midnight in Paris follows Gill, a writer working on his first novel, as he vacations in Paris with his fiancee (Rachel McAdams) and her parents. He's a nostalgic man who yearns for better times, and idealizes the 1920s. While wandering the empty streets at midnight one night, an antique car filled with enthusiastic party-goers stops, and Gill is ushered into the car with them. At first it seems Gill has been picked up by some 1920s role-playing enthusiasts who go by the names of Scott Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Picasso, and Dali. However, the viewer quickly learns that he has in fact been transported to another era. The nature of the tale is beautifully whimsical. The idea that at the stroke of midnight, Paris transforms into a sort of time machine where one can take a twirl in their most beloved decade of all time.

If you at all love Paris, Marion Cotillard (she dazzles as a lovely and mysterious woman Gill meets in the 20s), or the notion of being able to travel to an era and party with the greats of that time, then I highly recommend this film! It is charming; a movie that leaves you with a happy heart.

#2 Never Say Never

Yes, I watched the Justin Bieber movie! I have heard a few of this kid's songs, am familiar with "Bieber Fever" as it swept the nation, and know of his iconic hair. That's pretty much as much as I knew about Justin Bieber. I kept having this nagging feeling that I kindasorta wanted to watch it though, being that some of my friends have proclaimed themselves immediate Bieber fans upon watching it. So I figured, why not?

This movie/MTV documentary tells the story of Justin Bieber, a kid with a single mom from Canada. He is a completely self-taught musician --- yes, musician. Apparently he doesn't just sing and swish his hair, he plays drums, guitar, and piano --- and singer. Never once had a music lesson before he started getting famous and had the means to hire a vocal coach. There is one scene where he opened his Christmas gift from his mother - a bongo - and immediately pounded out a rhythmic beat...as a 2 year old!

No, this movie isn't the best movie I have ever seen. But it certainly satiated my curiosity about Bieber, and I have to say, the 17-year-old certainly has my respect! He is a hardworking kid who sold out Madison Square Gardens at the age of 16 --- a feat unheard of!

#3 I Don't Know How She Does It

This movie is an adaption from a book, and it is one of the strongest social commentaries on double standards between men and women in the work force that I have seen in a long time! Kate (Sarah Jessica Parker) is a married mom of two in Chicago who works for a top financing company. She seems to do it all with ease. Or actually she does it all with her lists, her tight management of both her home and work life. However, the more powerful her role becomes at work, the more difficult it is for her to be involved in raising her children. Her dilemma is very real, as today many women struggle to balance motherhood with competing with the boys at work.

If you love Sarah Jessica Parker and girl power, then this is a movie for you. It's funny and light, yet deeply insightful at the same time.

lady dates

As you guys know, I'm on my 12-day-summer, and I have been trying to squeeze every ounce of fun out of it as I can! While still trying to read & relax and get my ass in gear at the gym. It's been an interesting combo of ambitions, that's for sure! And during my break, I did manage to get together with two of my girlfriends for some much-needed lady dates!

On Wednesday, Erin and I decided to meet up at The Bent Fork in Loveland for some wine and dinner. Beforehand, I decided to check whether I could find any coupons for The Bent Fork, since it's a little pricy. On facebook, I saw that if you "check in" there with your phone, you can get 20% off of your entree. Awesome! Except for the fact that my phone looks like this:

Does it look like my phone has check-in capabilities?

No.

So I proceeded to ask The Bent Fork on facebook whether I could just write in my status or something that I was going to ear there and if I could get the 20% off deal. Their response was WAY better than anticipated! They said if I could get 10 people to "like" The Bent Fork on facebook, they'd give me a $25 gift card! Say whaaaaat?!?! Okay! Apparently I have some pretty quick-acting awesome friends on facebook, because within an hour of me releasing a "pleaseohplease like The Bent Fork so I can get a gift card" plea into facebookland, over 10 people got it done! So that was completely AWESOME to get an unexpected gift card! it kind of helps offset the gas money I spent driving down there, and then I felt I could be a little more indulgent with my meal! [by the way, this was my "last meal" before I started the body for life challenge :) ] I had a divine salmon salad, sweet potato french fries, a chilled glass of Riesling, and Erin and I split an insanely delicious caramel brownie dessert.

Then, since Erin and I are chattier than almost any two gals I've ever seen together, we decided to stroll around the shops for a bit. I made a few purchases - but they are totally justifiable! I am starting work at a clinic this fall as a PA Student, and I am in need of a few new business casual pieces. Up 'til now, my wardrobe has been full of:

a) scrubs 

b) American Eagle 

c) 2 suits and 

d) cleavage revealing tops and dresses.

Clearly none of a - d are appropriate for a business casual workplace. So, I feel completely justified in my Banana Republic [clearance!] and NY&C [only $15] buys. Okay, maybe a tad guilty since I'm over-justifying, but whatever  :)

We had a FAB night - and I love this girl!

Lady Date #2 went down yesterday with my girl Pro! [wow, just realized both dates were with fellow bloggers!] Lindsey came to Denver so that we could hit up the Tattered Cover, drink some tea, have some lunch, shop, and see a movie! Going to the Tattered Cover was on my 101 Things All Coloradans Should Do List that I found online a while back, so we decided to check it off the list! The Tattered Cover is a good-sized bookstore with a quaint feel. It offers both new and gently used books, a small coffee shop, and plenty of cozy chairs with which to park yourself with a good read. 

We enjoyed strolling around the store with our uber-hot teas, picking up interesting-looking books [we totally judge books by their covers, and wine by their labels for that matter!], and exclaiming, "Ooooh, did you ever read _______? It's so good" whenever we passed by one of our favorite reads.

And can you believe it - I didn't buy one single book! Oh I wanted to. I LOVE buying books. I am so proud of myself. I have at least 5 books at home waiting to be read, and I know with fall semester starting up on Monday [10 classes - 24 credits - YIKES] I won't be finishing my book stash anytime soon! I felt very responsible in that moment of resistance!

We sort of abruptly ended our book-perusing time as my large green tea had found my bladder, so we headed off to Cherry Creek for some lunch at Kona Grill! This place is quickly becoming one of my favorites for 2 reasons:

1. Lunch meal specials and happy hour specials

2. The food is SO. GOOD.

I mean, I got this fantastic spinach salad with strawberries, kiwis, cashews, blue cheese, chicken, and jalapeno raspberry vinaigrette that was probably the best salad I have EVER tasted! I was totally in love with it. I also got a spicy tuna roll! All for 10 bucks! Worth it! 

 Here's Lindsey's plate! Isn't sushi just so beautiful?!? And props to Pro for eating the real deal! My version of sushi is exclusive to they kind wrapped in rice and seaweed!

After our perfect and satisfying lunch, we strolled on over to the movie theater to catch Horrible Bosses. On our way, I found a cute pair of black shoes with a small heel on clearance at Bakers! And since I had a gift card to Bakers, it wasn't even really a purchase at all! [okay, that kind of talk is when Tyler compares me to the main character out of Confessions of a Shopaholic. Justifying purchases so much that they cease to even be purchases anymore, haha.] They are super cute and will be perfect for clinicals. Although - Erin, I'm now wishing I bought some of those business socks at NY&C haha :)

Anyway, we watched Horrible Bosses, and it was pretty entertaining! I'm always rooting for Jennifer Aniston, and boy - did she bust out of her typical nice-girl role in this film! The movie was a bit raunchy, and Colin Farell made me want to vomit instead of swoon, but it was pretty funny. Kevin Spacy played a great villain as usual, and the cast seemed to work really well together! 

In all, another wonderful day spent with a wonderful lady!

I'm so happy I had the time to see a few of my girls! I certainly didn't get 1-on-1 dates with everyone I would've liked this break, but I'll take what I can get! Knowing my impending doom beings Monday with microbiology, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, obstetrics, neonate, medical spanish, clinicals, physical diagnosis, psychosocial aspects of healthcare, and clinical reasoning. Damn. *sigh* 

It's off to the gym I go! Day 3 of Body For Life is underway and going well! Last night I lifted the shit out of my legs, and today it's cardio!!!

Hey there, bloggers! 

Here for a weekend update! For starters, just thought you should know that I saw an Ewok on a leash at the dog park today. Haha. It looked an awful lot like this:

This weekend was wonderful! Friday night I went out on the town with some of my ladies {note to self: NO MORE bottle service! Sitting in a booth drinking and taking pictures gives me a falce perception of my levels of drunkness...} Made for a bad Saturday morning! But it's always fun to get dolled up!

 

Saturday afternoon my girl Pro came up and we had a loooong chatfest followed by an ogle-fest when we went to see No Strings Attached. It was such a great movie! Everyone in it was so funny and it had phenomenal one-liners! Quite a different character from Portman's role in Black Swan! I loved it. We then went for dinner at BJ's, where I had a classy giant glass of chocolate milk with my dinner. Haha. Real mature...and delicious! At home we gabbed more on the couch, watched The Blindside {for the first time, go Sandra!}, and enjoyed root beer floats! Unfortunately, Pro and I always are too wrapped up in our fun, and we never remember to take pictures together! So I have no documentation of our fun :/

I am really excited because I rented The Pillars of the Earth tv miniseries. I read that book last fall, and was super excited to hear about the miniseries...only to miss the miniseries when it aired!   

I am also looking forward to the SAG awards tonight!  I've been really into the award season this year for some reason...

catching up on movies...

Hey guys! Hope you all had a wonderful weekend! I worked most of it, but had last night off, so my husband and I decided to catch up on some award winners!

We poured some glasses of Da Vinci Chianti {YUM} and settled in first to watch The Kids Are All Right, starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo {also the girl who played Alice in Tim Burton's fab production and the boy who was in Bridge to Tarabithia, but anyhoo...}. This one won 2 Golden Globes. And they were well-deserved! I absolutely LOVED this movie! It wasn't pretentious or overtly Hollywood-ized to create excess drama. It was just a story about a family. A lesbian couple who used a sperm donor to conceive their two children, and the children decide they want to find the donor. It is completely believable, and the acting is incredible throughout. I really recommend this movie :)

We then watched The Social Network. I wasn't wildly excited about watching this one, but it won 4 Golden Globes, so I figured I should give it a shot. From an informational perspective, it was really interesting. The history if Facebook was pretty cool. The acting was good as well. But it wasn't exactly riveting. I mean, I don't feel like it was a waste of my time, but it wasn't something I'll be watching again. 

And now, just for fun, I'm watching Charlie St. Cloud :) Not because it's a Golden Globe winner, but because I had a rent 2 get 1 free coupon for Blockbuster Express, and I've been wanting to see it. Zac Efron is some seriously delicious eye candy and a pretty good actor, in my opinion. So anyway, there's my update. 

I still really want to see The King's Speech before the Oscars roll around. And whatever else I have the time for :)

Off to cook! On tonight's menu: Crab Ravioli with Lemon Butter sauce. I'm already drooling...

movies + award season

Hey heyyyy! I'm sitting here watching Biggest Loser {hellooooo hottie new trainers!!!} and thinking about Sunday night's Golden Globes. I was super thrilled with Glee's success! In case you don't know, Glee won Best TV Series --- Comedy or Musical. Chris Colfer {Kurt} won best supporting actor in a TV series and Jane Lynch {Sue Sylvester} won best supporting actress in a TV series. I'm so happy for them. Those two are funny as hell and have done such a great job with their roles. 

I was also so glad to see the success of The Fighter! Christian Bale was PHENOMENAL as the drug addict Dickey, brother of Micky the boxer {Mark Wahlberg}. So insanely good in his roll --- and very much worthy of his Golden Globe for best supporting actor in a drama. And the wacky Alice, mother of Micky, won for best supporting actress in a drama.  

I was happy that Toy Story 3 won best animated film, because that one made me cryyyyy! And GO Natalie Portman! I didn't even think best actress was a competition this year. She was stellar in Black Swan. Incredible. God I love her.

The 2011 Oscar nominees are anounced one week from today! Hopefully I'll have seen some of those movies on my to-see list before the Oscars come around!!!

What have been your favorite movies this season? I ADORED Black Swan, The Fighter, and Tangled. {while Little Fockers was funny, I did NOT adore it. Same humor, and Jessica Alba's character was a little too outrageous for me...}

this issue deserves attention

Hey y'all :)

I had a pretty awesome weekend that consisted of: attempting to catch up on sleep, Cheesecake Factory with work friends, drinks with more friends, cleaning the home top to bottom, and a lady date with Pro to see Eat, Pray, Love then dine at D Bar. {If you don't know what D Bar is...click here. And if you haven't read Eat, Pray, Love --- read it!}

The movie was, in my opinion, GREAT! I read the book by Elizabeth Gilbert about 3 or 4 years ago, so I have forgotten most of the details {my memory for books is AWFUL}, but I do remember the book's essence. The essence of self-discovery and allowing oneself to enjoy life without having to justify it. I loved this essence, and the movie captured it beautifully. At first, I was skeptical about Julia Roberts in this role. She is a wonderful actress, one that I enjoy watching immensely, but I wasn't sure if she could play the quiet lady laden with heartbroken baggage. In the end, her skills left me impressed, and I thought she portrayed her character as well as anyone else I could think of! 

That being said, after the movie, we went to D Bar for some delectable desserts, keeping that Italian zest for food and "joy of doing nothing" in mind (from the movie, of course). I think I could be Italian. 

Since getting home from our girlfriend date, I have been enjoying relaxing on the couch in our spotless home {thank goodness for visitors...or we'd NEVER clean, I swear! lol} catching up on my huge stack of magazines piled up on the coffee table.

In reading my September 2010 Marie Claire {Mary Kate Olsen graces the cover}, I came across an article that struck a cord within me. Written by Ralph Blumenthal, the article "The Dangerous Rise in Untested Rape Kits" illuminates a serious issue that I had never even thought about. Apparently, there are hundreds of thousands of rape kits in the US just sitting in store rooms waiting to be tested. Women have been waiting for 20+ years for the results of the rape kits. Some women's cases are closed before the kits are even tested. How is any of that okay??? 

The most sickening part of this all is that most rapists are serial rapists. Think about it. If a woman was raped in 1990 and her kit was never tested, how many more unlinked rapes has that perpetrator committed since that first one? All because the kit never got tested. 

The sad reality is that the Los Angeles Police Department has close to 20,000 rape kits waiting to be tested. They just don't have the manpower and resources to get through them in a timely manner. Recently, New York City unveiled a $300 million facility for DNA testing, and now the arrest rate for rapes is 70% --- over three times the national average. Kudos, NYPD! Also, the governor of Illinois recently signed a bill that makes it so that rape kits MUST be tested within 10 days of their retrieval. Double kudos! 

It is with my strongest hopes that more states follow suit and sign bills like Illinois has. Since when is ignoring DNA involved in a crime acceptable? It's not. If you want to read the whole article, here is the link:

Please read it and spread the word about this issue. The government does respond to public outcries against issues like these, albeit admittedly not always in the timeliest of manners.

my love for leo grows

Hey hey! 

So, we spent another weekend up in Fort Collins this weekend, enjoying some time with our families. On Saturday night, Tyler and I went to see Inception with my parents. I was naturally stoked to see the movie, because anything with Leonardo DiCaprio is going to be amazing. He is hands down my favorite actor! What a versatile actor with more depth and feeling than many can muster. And he's got a running tally of choosing phenomenal scripts. His latest hits: Shutter Island. The Blood Diamond. The Departed. The Aviator. Catch Me If You Can. Gangs of New York. And that's just in the last 8 years. Anyway, clearly I adore and admire the man.

He certainly did not disappoint in his latest blockbuster! Inception was witty in that Ocean's Eleven way, intense in that Eagle Eye way, and mind-blowing in that Scorsese way. 

 Leo stars as Cobb, a thief whose specialty is stealing important information out of people's minds while they are sleeping {extraction}. He is trying desperately to get his name cleared (the US Government thinks he killed his wife - played eerily by Marion Cotillard), and a powerful businessman (Ken Watanabe) offers him a way to get home free. Cobb must implant an idea into someone's mind {inception}. This has rarely been done before, and in order to complete the task, he must assemble a team of experts. 

Joseph Gordon Levitt (Angels in the Outfield) plays Arthur, Cobb's sidekick, and DAMN he is so hot in this movie! I'm not sure what it was about him, but every time he came on the screen, my jaw just dropped. Looks like crushes never truly go away! Not only is he sexy, his character was SUCH a badass!

Ellen Page joins the team as Ariadne the "Architect", or the person who designs the target's dreams to make them appear real. She is super smart and most definitely keeps up with the boys in this one, even telling DiCaprio off a time or two!

In addition, there is a chemist who puts them in dream state (not to mention the dream within a dream within a dream within a dream state it goes to...yeah, level 4 y'all), a forger who adds some humor to the mix, and Michael Caine plays Cobb's father. The action never stops as this star-studded film amazes from start to finish!

Needless to say, {but I'm saying it anyway} I highly recommend this film!

I want to see it again. 

ASAP.
