this book = scandalous!

Hay hayyyy!

I hope you all had a great 4th of July weekend! Maybe you are enjoying an extended weekend today :) We had a pretty fun one! We saw Eclipse yesterday with Mandrew - and I have to say, if I could cut out the Bella/Edward scenes then it would be a great movie! I loved the action scenes and always love to see Mr. Lautner without a shirt. I may be the only chick on the planet who thinks this - but I think Edward and Bella have the most dysfunctional awkward relationship EVER, and it makes me gag when they talk to each other. But Dakota fanning made a reprise as the torturous Jane, so that was cool.

Today we went on a 4-mile walk at the dog park, and the pups are now passed out for what I would presume to be the remainder of the afternoon :) Gryffin played his little heart out in the creek while Penny stood behind us so not to get splashed by mud and sand.

But what this post is really about is the book I read this weekend. Tyler and I stopped by Barnes & Noble on Saturday night to look through the sales tables. We left with 2 books each and a total of $17 - score! The book I decided to start on is called Snuff by Chuck Palahniuk. Not that I have ever heard of this author, but I saw that his other novels include Fight Club and Stranger Than Fiction, so I decided to check it out.

The blurb on the inside cover reads:
Cassie Wright, porn priestess, intends to cap her legendary career by breaking the world record for serial fornication. On camera. With six hundred men. Snuff unfolds from the perspectives of Mr. 72, Mr. 137, and Mr. 600, who await their turn on camera in a very crowded green room. This wild, lethally funny, and thoroughly researched novel brings the huge yet underacknowledged presence of pornography in contemporary life into the realm of literary fiction at last. Who else but Chuck Palahniuk would dare do such a thing? Who else could do it so well, so unflinchingly, and with such an incendiary (you might say) climax?
So, I knew the book would involve sex and scandal just by reading this, but I thought it was going to be somewhat of a frothy comedy as well. Nope. The first 80 pages or so are pure raunch! If that is even a word. Such hardcore descriptions of things I'm not sure I ever intended to visualize, especially with such detail! But the book actually gave way to a decent plot, Mr. 72 thinks he is the porn star's son and could Mr. 600 be Mr. 72's father? It turns to a plot of love and revenge, with a humorous and surprising twist to finish it off. I would say I recommend this book if you don't mind venturing into the world of pornography - just for 197 pages. But if you're easily offended or shy about sex, leave this one alone.

I probably should not have even admitted to you all that I read this, because now you all think I'm some skanky sex addict who reads "literature" like this on a regular basis. Not so. But I do like to be open-minded, and I sure learned some things I didn't know before reading this little book!

Cheers :)
